GALVANIC ISOLATORS
Galvanic corrosion is caused by galvanic current flow between the vessel and shore side earth. This can happen when a vessel is connected to a shore supply and shore earth, and another vessel, also connected, is moored alongside. A circuit will exist between the two vessels via the common earth and the conductive water. It can also occur if the vessel is moored alongside a metal jetty that is also commoned to earth. The fitting of a galvanic isolator in "series" with the shore side earth will help block the low voltage currents, but still allows passage to ground of the shore side supplies in the event of a higher voltage "short"
